Yellowstone and Glacier 2009 - Day 4 to 6

Day 4 - Yellowstone begins

Yellowstone and Glacier 2009 - Day 1 to 3

August 2009

13 days of excitement! 4500 miles of driving and we are back!

Here is the quick summary, maybe some day I will write more detail.

Day 1 Muskego to Black Hills, SD
We drove 13 hours from Muskego, WI to the Black Hills. We stopped off in Wall, to see Wall Drug. About 59 signs lined the highway for the 200 miles before Wall. Wall Drug was a series of little shops and various fun things like a 6 foot rabbit. We purchased some salt water taffy, took some pictures, debated some ice cream and headed out! By about 9:15 we were in front of Mt Rushmore as the light show started. It was cool!

Camped in the KOA in Hill City, very nice cabin!

Day 2 - Black Hills Sites today
We started the day seeing Mount Rushmore in the daylight, followed by Crazy Horse (only about 20 minutes apart. We then went through Custer State Park and saw a herd of bison along with a few other critters. Highway 16A is one of the scenic byways, it was well worth the views to see the scenery. We had made reservations at Jewel Cave for the afternoon(good thing because the wait was about 2 hours). The tour was perfect, the "scenic tour" was about 1 hour and 20 minutes and was similar to our Mammoth trip. Back to the cabin for an evening fire with hot dogs, marshmallows and "washers" as well as cribbage!

Day 3 Black Hills to Cody, Wyoming
Breakfast at the KOA was pancakes and buffalo sausage, yum. We jumped in the car to head for Cody, Wyoming. We had talked about doing Devil's Tower but decided to save it for the way home. The sage fields of Wyoming were interesting scenery. Lots of coal trains and cattle. We hit the mountains, caught a few views and then hit construction on Hwy 14. One minute we are doing switchbacks and the next we are on a dirt road looking for how to get out. We switched to 14a, enjoyed 10% grade down and arrived a while later in Cody. Cody was pricey, the Best Western was $150 and it looked like it was a 60's motor lodge. Nick had stayed at the Americinn and said it was decent so we pulled in there and checked Expedia with the laptop (using their wireless). About the same price as Best Western, but at least it was nice. The boys hit the pool and we hit the hot tub. We went to town and watched the Cody gun fight, it was funny. Good eats at Bubba's BBQ!

North Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains

In 2003, we went to Georgia to catch up with the Bates family. We hit Six Flags in Atlanta, had fun partying for Susanne's 40th at Bell Bottom's.

The driveway wasn't easy, it wasn't in town, it was not isolated, but it wasn't crowded. The hot tub was on the porch, with a stone fireplace all in a screened in porch.
